Ruchi woke up with mild headaches these days. Her health was deteriorating day by day. Her body ached but she didn’t want to give in to it. She just popped in the painkillers prescribed by her doctor whenever the pains became unbearable.
That day she was at home when Maniamma came in for her daily tasks. Ruchi had decided to take the day off. She was resting on the sofa with the TV on.
Maniamma went about doing her work and occasionally checked up on Ruchi. At one point she found her sitting on the sofa with her legs tucked under her, drinking from her cup of coffee with tears running down her cheeks.
She had been ignoring Ruchi’s strange behaviour for sometime now. Ruchi would get irritated easily, she started to complain more and she was not her happy go lucky self anymore. Although Maniamma had decided that she would not get involved in their private matters, she just couldn’t ignore this.
She sat down beside her and tried to hug her, but Ruchi just got up and left. Maniamma felt hurt, she got up and continued with her tasks.
After a while Ruchi walks into the kitchen and started to talk to Maniamma about what was troubling her. She was wondering whether she should file a complaint against her boss for harassment. It was nothing serious , but Ruchi had been feeling uncomfortable for a while now.
She had worked hard to reach this position at work and she wasn’t willing to just leave and start over somewhere else. This new boss was a woman and she found fault with everything that Ruchi did.
Her colleagues were also witness to this and all of them were clueless as to why her boss was so mean to her. All the stress was taking its toll on her health. Atul would ask her to quit if he came to know about this, so she kept everything to herself.
Maniamma wasn’t sure what to say. She thought for a while before responding to Ruchi. Once she was done with the kitchen work, she sat down with Ruchi on the sofa and held her hand in hers.
“Women are a woman’s greatest enemy. Take the mother in law and daughter in law relationship for example. Maybe your boss fears that you are next in place to takeover her position at work. Maybe she feels threatened. Maybe she has some other issues that’s making her behave like that. I think you should speak to her first before taking any further action.”
Ruchi has always felt that Maniamma was more forward and open minded that most people from her generation. Her mother herself was never supporting of most of her decisions. The influence of such a thoughtful woman is definitely a blessing in her life. She hoped she can be a similar influence in her daughters’ lives when they grow up and have to work twice as hard, to be successful, than their male counterparts.
“Be the woman who fixes another woman’s crown , without telling the world it was crooked.” , quoted Aunty.
